Chase County Doin's March 27, 2008 - Spring Break has come and gone! And our special Spring Break present this year, was a visit from the Houston son, Brian, and his beautiful wife, Shari, and our grandsons, Kelly (8) and Justin (nearly 6). We accomplished everything on our list, and as an added bonus, the boys went fishing.......and actually caught a fish! I think everybody could have played a little longer, but it was time to get back to Houston. It was a great way to welcome the Spring of the year! And we all got to enjoy Pickin' last Friday night. Little Brother Ed's children and their families were there. And Derrick helped Justin play the fiddle. It was fine! Next Friday night will be OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. PRAIRIE FIRE FESTIVAL isn't far away. We understand that along with the usual festivities, that John Morrison will have his exhibit at the Gallery at Cottonwood Falls. Be sure to look about for a schedule of events. We had a swell time at Tea last week. It has been suggested that we ask Jackie Dickie to bring her photos from their China trip for the next tea. "The next Tea"......hmmmmm.......that sounds like fun! We'll keep ya' posted for the date. Had a phone call from Dan Bliss this week. He is offering to come down to "open" for Nick Charles this fall for BroomWeed Festival. Now........THAT'd be a treat. We'd have to begin music early, so's we could get it all in!!!!!!! We have been sizing up the fabric for the new gown for the Grand Ball for the opening of the Chase County CourtHouse. That's gonna be SOME occasion! And we'll give you a date just as soon as we get one. Sometime late Summer, perhaps. A bit of wind, some sunshine, and a little rain.........sounds like Springtime in our wonderful Community of Chase County, Kansas!!!!!!!!!! March 13, 2008 - Oh My! Wow! Whew! Sigh! That was SOME evening! The Spring Ball is history! It was beautiful; it was spectacular; it was amazing! Four hours of the most wonderful music; the sensational costumes; fabulous atmosphere! It was quite the event. Whoever would have thought that there would be so many people from ALL OVER the State who liked to dress up in costume. There was everything from a young man straight out of Dickens' Christmas Carol, to Mountain Men, to Western Shooters (complete with sidearms), to the Boer Wars Soldiers, Confederate Soldiers, Union Soldiers, to 1861 formal attire, to 1873 Cowboy stuff. And ladies in hoop skirts, in bustles, in cotton gowns, in taffeta gowns, in satin gowns. And children in PRECIOUS gowns.......and dancing their little hearts out. Hats off to Derrick Doty and Company. It was an amazing event! So, this coming Friday is K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'' at the Emma at 7:30 PM. And Saturday is the monthly CONTRA DANCE. We're looking forward to seeing some of the 4-H youth in attendance. Ladies (and Gentlemen), make your reservations for TEA AT THREE at the Emma. We'll enjoy a St. Patrick's Day tea on Monday, March 17 at 3:00. Hat and gloves required. And the following Friday, March 21, is TALLGRASS GOSPEL. We MIGHT have some special guests from Texas with us. And to follow up a bit.......mark your calendars for Thursday evening, April 10. We had invited a gentleman from Wichita who makes Native American Drums......to come play show and tell during Prairie Fire Festival. Well, he asked if he could bring his "Singers". And, when we were making arrangements with "Apache Joe" for the "Singers", he asked if they could bring their "Women". He said that there was one National Champion Dancer, and several Princesses! Now, like, we're gonna turn any of this down, for Heaven's sake???? So, on Thursday, April 10, plan to join us to see MEDICINE PARK Native American drum players, singers, and dancers........all in Native American dress. On Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 PM, join us for The THE BEASLEY BOYS in Concert for the Prairie Fire Festival. On Saturday, May 10, JON TROAST will be in concert at the Emma. This evening (dinner and performance) is by reservation only 273-6020. Now, there's MORE than one Bluebird. We're hopeful; we're optomistic - we're praying!!!!!!! So, happy nearly Springtime in our not-yet-very-warm Community of Chase County, Kansas. March 6, 2008 - It's here; it's finally here! Saturday evening, this week, March 8......is the SPRING BALL. The Victorian-style ball will be held from 8 to 12 PM at the Community Building at Swope Park. Costumes are encouraged, but not required; it is a dress-up occasion. Families are encouraged to come join in. The Ball is an excellent opportunity for young people to learn history, manners, etiquette, customs......of previous times. The orchestra (yes, ORCHESTRA) is sounding wonderful, and so many people have put so much work into this. We do hope that you'll enjoy it. Tickets are available at the Emma, and will also be available at the door. It will be a FINE evening. The dances will be taught/explained. Now, just in case you might have thought we were talking about Spring.........sadly, we weren't. But, how far away can it really be? We saw our first bluebird yesterday. We know that Diana is busy scoping the skies for the first buzzard, and Sunday evening last, we were discussing Spring frogs. NEXT Saturday evening will be the March Contra Dance (held on the 3rd Saturday night of every month). This next month's dance will also be at the Community Building. And we know that all of the County's 4-H youth have been invited to attend, compliments of the Chase County Contra Society. A couple of long-range events
for you to put into your social calendars: The music every Friday night........at 7:30 PM. Ya might want to re-do the webbing on the old lawn chair. Maybe oil the hinges a little bit. It's gonna be a fun year in our musical Community of Chase County, Kansas. Questions? Email us |
