August 25, 2011 - There was a nice crowd at the Tallgrass Express performance, who enjoyed a wonderful evening's performance! We should do that again! Okay, we WILL.........how about NEXT month, Saturday, September 17. Sounds like a plan!
THIS coming Friday evening, August 26th, will be OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session at 7:30.
Friday evening, September 2nd will begin the rotation again with TALLGRASS PICKIN'.
Friday evening, September 9th, will be K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'.
Friday evening, September 16th, will be TALLGRASS GOSPEL jam session.
And, as we mentioned before, TALLGRASS EXPRESS on Saturday, September 17th.
Friday, September 23rd will be OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY.
Then, we'll welcome NICK CHARLES for BROOMWEED FESTIVAL on Saturday, September 24th. We hear tell that there will be a little shade-tree afternoon pickin' that same day.......with "Miller's Mule", and perhaps even another group or two. We've always said that BROOMWEED FESTIVAL is for all of those who didn't get enough pickin' at Winfield, or for those who need to wean down slowly!
The Friday night jam session on September 30th, will be CONTRA MUSIC - the CONTRA MUSICIANS will be practicing for the GRAND BALL to be held the following evening, Everybody is welcome to join in.
We have actually seen parts of a costume being created for the MASQUERADE BALL to be held Saturday, October 1.
School begins next week for all of our youth. Summer DID pass by!
And so it goes, for the next few weeks - in our Back to School Community of Chase County, Kansas!
August 18, 2011 - It’s almost pleasant enough to think about getting’ busy again! Things to do; places to go.
Friday night this week will be TALLGRASS GOSPEL PICKIN’ at 7:30 PM. Friday night outside is a “maybe”.
Plan to join TALLGRASS EXPRESS this Saturday, August 20, 7:30 PM. We’re watching the weather, hoping to be able to bring them outside at least ONCE this summer! We’ll be outside the Cafe if we can be; indoors at 220 ½ Broadway, if we need to be.
Friday night, August 26th is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session. And then, it’s September!
September is when we welcome everybody to BROOMWEED FESTIVAL. NICK CHARLES is looking forward to it; he’s emailed several times. And we’re looking forward to HIM! We’re gonna bring a little more music into BROOMWEED FESTIVAL this year. We’ve scheduled a BlueGrass group called “Miller’s Mule” for mid-afternoon. And, we’re working with another group for earlier afternoon. Gonna find a shade tree and make a little music!
The date for our next GRAND BALL is Saturday, October 1. And, it will be a MASQUERADE BALL. This will give you time to prepare your costume! As a note for musicians, the Fifth Friday in September is Contra Dance Music. And we will use that opportunity for the musicians to practice Contra Music for the BALL the following evening. Everyone is invited to attend Fifth Friday, of course, but should be warned that there may be some “startin’ and stopping’” during the music. Because it will also be a practice session.
And….just for the record, the date for the CHRISTMAS BALL is Saturday, November 26.
We can barely believe we’re talking about Christmas already - and School has not yet begun. But it won’t be long - in our “My, How Time Flies” Community of Chase County, Kansas!
August 11, 2011 - Whoooooeeee!!! The new CourtHouse Clock is working!!! The face and hands were replaced Friday.....and the electrician apparently visited on Monday, because this morning, the clock is running! The style of the face and hands are French Renaissance (matching the style of the CourtHouse). And, it looks RIGHT! An interesting tidbit of information.....is that the clock mechanism is chime-ready. Hmmm? Thanks to all of you who contributed to the CourtHouse Clock Fund and/or Neva's Memorial. The new clock is splendid!
Saturday night's concert was also fairly splendid! Wonderful music; many laughs, and a fine twirl around the floor or two! "The Cottonwood Waltz" tune is really a lovely piece of music!
Our next Concert will be TALLGRASS EXPRESS on Saturday, August 20. After the embarrassing "government" events of this last weekend, some "real heartland music" is DEFINITELY in order.
Friday night this week is K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'.
And Friday night, August 19 will be TALLGRASS GOSPEL. We've enjoyed recently, the music of a couple of new (to our group) Gospel musicians.
Friday, August 26 will be OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY.
AND, we've visited with NICK CHARLES. He's looking forward to BROOMWEED FESTIVAL in September. Also, during BROOMWEED FESTIVAL, we'll meet "MILLER'S MULE".....a fairly new BlueGrass Band from the Newton/Hutchinson area.
And do enjoy this break in the weather. Why, it's plumb near pleasant out there! In our greenin' back up Community of Chase County, Kansas.
August 4, 2011 - Lots of Fair news this week, so we'll keep this short and sweet!
Friday night, August 5 is TALLGRASS PICKIN' at 7:30 PM.
Saturday night, August 6, we'll welcome THE READY BROTHERS at 7:30 PM for an evening of fun BlueGrass Music. There'll be "Been", "Ever" and "Never", and "Wuzzy" READY. And we'll be indoors at 220 1/2 Broadway. We're not messin' with this heat!
Friday night, August 12 will be K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'.
Friday night, August 19 will be TALLGRASS GOSPEL PICKIN'.
TALLGRASS EXPRESS will return to the Music Hall Stage on Saturday evening, August 20.
Got a cute email this morning........featuring a new Kansas rain guage. It is a bottle cap! And ain't it the truth? In our scorching hot Community of Chase County, Kansas.
July 28, 2011 - Doncha' just LOVE computers? I'm not normally a violent person.....but I must admit to having had THOUGHTS about pounding this laptop into tiny little pieces!! I have spoken with several people named "Peggy" at various phone numbers at AT&T. What has amused me the MOST in this recent encounter.....was learning that AT&T had "discontinued" my password.........and THEN, sent me an email telling me that they had done that! Think about that for a minute.....
Anyway.....let's plan for the Friday night Jam Session this week. We'll be pickin' "OLD TIME" music, please. And if the "OLD TIME" musicians aren't in attendance - then, we'll revert to pickin' just whatever.
Then, NEXT Friday night is the first Friday night in August (how'd we get THERE so fast?) So, that'll make it TALLGRASS PICKIN'.
The Second Friday night in August will be K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'.
And Saturday night, August 6th, we'll welcome the READY BROTHERS to town. Last Saturday evening, Judy Coder performed "The Cottonwood Waltz", which was actually written by one of the READY BROTHERS. It's beautiful tune, and very.....waltz-able! The READY BROTHERS are good for an evening of laughter and good bluegrass music. So get ready to welcome Ben, Ever and Never.....and Wuzzy READY. And wouldn't be wonderful if we could be outside?
And just a reminder.....TALLGRASS EXPRESS will perform on the 3rd Saturday night of August.
Judging from the weather reports, we've got more of this wretched weather to endure for awhile longer. Do what you can to stay safe.....and comfortable....in our sure 'nuff Summertime Community of Chase County, Kansas.
July 21, 2011 - Here's what we know about NEXT WEEKEND: Friday night's OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session will be held INSIDE!
And JUDY CODER and most of COWGIRL SWING and fiddlin' JAKE SIMPSON will perform INSIDE!

And then there are all of the usual FAIR activities Monday, July 25th through Thursday, July 28th, with our personal favorite, the Ice Cream Social on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
JUDY CODER's group with JAKE SIMPSON will join us on Saturday evening, July 23rd at 7:30 p.m. We'll be at the Emma Chase Music Hall - INDOORS, where it is COOL!
There is a 5th Friday this month.....and we'll be playing OLD TIME MUSIC.
Then, on Saturday, August 6th, we'll welcome the READY BROTHERS to town. Let's see - there'll be BEEN Ready, EVER and NEVER Ready, and WUZZY ready. They'll be pickin' a delightful evening of amusing bluegrass music! You'll not want to miss this one!
There's still a lot to do......in this sizzlin' hot Community of Chase County, Kansas!
July 14, 2011 - Could Saturday night on the CourtHouse lawn have been any more perfect? The 5:00 rainstorm which skirted Cottonwood Falls just to the East dropped the temperature a good 15 degrees before the Concert.....without getting the lawn wet. Music Director Haselhuhn and the Tallgrass BIG BAND were in fine form. And the good music brought back some wonderful memories of earlier days in Chase County. Even the ice cream was plenty tasty. Now, THAT evening is definitely worth repeating!
We've had some grand jam sessions on Broadway. We're always amazed that regardless of the temperature during the day, the street seems to cool down as soon as the sun drops behind the building facades, and with a little breeze, it's plenty comfortable.
This Friday night will be TALLGRASS GOSPEL Pickin'.
And Saturday night, we'll enjoy TALLGRASS EXPRESS for their monthly performance. We'll plan to be outside this month, unless weather sends us down to 220 1/2 Broadway. The Concert begins at 7:30 PM. Maybe a little homemade Ice Cream?
NEXT Friday night will be OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session.
And Saturday night, July 23rd at 7:30, we'll welcome JUDY CODER, fiddlin' JAKE SIMPSON, and 2/3 of COWGIRL SWING to the Broadway Stage, for a salute to the American Cowboy. Weather permitting, we may try that Ice Cream Social thing again.
The last Friday night of this month will be OLD TIME MUSIC jam session at 7:30.
Saturday night, August 6th, we'll welcome THE READY BROTHERS to downtown Cottonwood Falls. That's Ben, Ever, Never, and Wuzzy Ready.......for an evening of amusing BlueGrass Music. You've seen one or two of these guys at jam sessions occasionally. Lots and LOTS of fun!
And we remind you that the CHASE COUNTY FAIR is near upon us. We see the Church ladies getting their ducks in a row for the meals. And before you ask...........NO, they're NOT serving DUCK! I DID hear something about Chicken and Noodles!!!
So, mind your schedule for the next few weeks - in our busy schedule Community of Chase County, Kansas.
June 30, 2011 - TALLGRASS PICKIN' is this Friday night the 1st!
And the excitement for this weekend is the TALLGRASS BIG BAND under the direction of Bob Haselhuhn of Emporia.....performing BIG BAND swing music of the l940's at 7:30 PM on the East CourtHouse lawn. Bring a lawnchair for outdoor seating. At this point, it appears that the weather will cooperate, but just in case it doesn't........we can retire to the Prairie PastTimes building.
In addition, we'll offer an ICE CREAM SOCIAL at the Concert - with actual homemade ice cream (it's already in the freezer), and wonderful home-made cake.
The Chase County Fireworks Display is scheduled for 9:45 following the Concert. We'll be able to get it ALL in in one evening! HAPPY 4th of JULY on the 2nd!
How many of you remember our Friday night musician friend "Harmonica Mike" - Mike Neufeld from Little River, Kansas? Also occasionally known as "Mike Driver". Mike used to come over occasionally to play the most wonderful "honkin" harmonica. He has been ill for a couple of years, and we learned this week that he passed away the week before FolkLife Festival. We have frequently talked of Mike..........and how much he enjoyed the jam sessions - and how much we enjoyed HIM.
K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN' will be Friday, July 8th.
TALLGRASS GOSPEL JAM SESSION will be Friday, July 15th.
TALLGRASS EXPRESS on the 16th.
Some FAIR events begin on Thursday, July 21.
OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session will be Friday, July 22nd.
JUDY CODER, COWGIRL SWING, and JAKE SIMPSON on the 23rd.
And we'll pick a little OLD TIME music on Friday, July 29th.
Sounds like a schedule to us.....in our busy schedule Community of Chase County, Kansas!
June 23, 2011 - Just WHO is in charge of the weather???? We've had enough wind, now. We are grateful for the rain.....mostly.
Lots of events for the past month or so. Our next event is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. That's at 7:30 p.m. Friday night, June 24.
Friday, July 1st, we'll begin the June rotation of Friday night Jam Sessions, with TALLGRASS PICKIN'. Wouldn't it be lovely if we could be outside?
Saturday, July 2nd, plan to join us on the lawn of the Chase County CourtHouse for BIG BAND MUSIC performing music of the l940's. If you remember Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Bennie Goodman, and folks of that nature.....you'll love this.....you'll need to bring your lawn chair for seating. I'm told that we'll also hear a bit of John Philip Sousa towards the end of the evening. AND, we'll have an ice cream social! The ice cream is already churned. IF weather is threatening, we'll be at Prairie PastTimes at 220 1/2 Broadway. Pretty good way to celebrate Independence Day!!!!

And, Saturday, July 23rd, JUDY CODER and company will return to Broadway, with PART of COWGIRL SWING, and JAKE SIMPSON, super young fiddle player. We'll be celebrating the Day of the American Cowboy.
July has 5 Fridays, so we'll get in an evening of OLD TIME and CONTRA jam session on Friday, July 29th.
Planning for a delightful summertime - in our Summertime Community of Chase County, Kansas.
June 16, 2011 - It's FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL TIME! Thank you, Lord, for the beautiful weekend weather - for the River Suite, for the Symphony in the Flint Hills, and for the FolkLife Festival. Wasn't wasn't the FolkLife Festival wonderful? Let's see - we've made it through the Cottonwood 200, the Flint Hills Rodeo, Bike Across Kansas, and the Flint Hills FolkLife Festival. And we're still vertical! And thanks to all of you local folks who participated in the FolkLife Festival! It was a dandy!
Next on the list of exciting things to do is......TALLGRASS GOSPEL PICKIN' on Friday night at 7:30.
Then, the TALLGRASS EXPRESS Concert this coming weekend. Also with JUDY will be part of her COWGIRL SWING band. It'll be a fine evening on Broadway. Bring your lawn chairs!

So, we'll see you on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., for K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'. We're sure hoping to be outside for the first time this year! So, bring your lawn chairs! Then, on Saturday evening at 7:30 PM, the TALLGRASS PICKERS will gather on the CourtHouse lawn for another jam session. Plan to bring your lawn chairs for that, too.
There'll be plenty of music all 'round the FESTIVAL on Saturday...........Banjo pickin', and the GARY HUGHES MEMORIAL FIDDLE WORKSHOP (with other instruments, as well) at 10 AM and 4 PM.

May 19, 2011 - The 13th annual FLINT HILLS FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL is coming together nicely. We don't suppose that any of you would be interested in freshly churned ice cream? Maybe in a larger cup with some fresh home-made root beer? And maybe a nice music session under the trees? Hmmmm! Well, just in case you MIGHT be interested - the dates are Saturday and Sunday, June 11th and 12th - on the lawn of the Chase County CourtHouse.

May 5, 2011 - Ah, well! Wasn't the Spring Ball somethin'? Beautiful gowns; lovely music; much gaiety. And the very best part of all were the youngsters. We should do that again. And Saturday evening, October 1 seems much too far away. But that, in fact, is the date for the next one. And it should probably be a Masquerade Ball. Mark your calendars, please.
Once before, we were corresponding with a gentleman about bringing a small BIG BAND to town, and we couldn't make that work. Well, we've discovered another group, and so the process begins again. If only we could get our hands on some big band sheet music.....we suspect that we have enough talented musicians to have a LOCAL Big Band. Made a trip South yesterday..........Oh, my, the pastures are lookin' fine.
Have you ever heard the term BLACKBERRY WINTER? That's a Southern explanation for a period of cold weather following the beginning of warm Spring weather. A little research tells us that Patti Page recorded a song by that name in the late 50's/early 60's. So.....let's consider THIS past few days our Blackberry Winter.....in our Springtime Community of Chase County, Kansas.

And for the month of September.....and you might as well get this in your appointment book NOW.....we'll have TWO BlueGrass Pickin' nights (one on the 2nd Friday, and one on the 4th Friday nights), and we'll be moving Old Timey Rock & Roll to the last Friday night (that'd be the 5th one) of the month. Because.....we're planning some concentrated BlueGrass music on the weekend of September 23, 24 & 25th this year. Now, follow those directions carefully and mark your social calendar. We'll remind you again later.
We're grateful for the rain, and we'll also be grateful when it stops. The rain is good for the pastures and the ponds and the gardens, but it's time for some pretty sunshine.....in our Springtime Community of Chase County, Kansas.
April 14, 2011 - While the skies are full of plumes of smoke tonight, Prairie Fire Festival week is now behind us. The speakers were wonderful; we learned so much - just as we do every year. We told Erin Blackshere Pouppert (our Kaw Nation speaker), that it was entirely possible that we now knew more about the Kaw Nation than they did. She just laughed, and said that THAT was entirely possible!
Hasn't this past few weeks been fun? We've had a run of some spectacular music, some fun people, and regardless of the weather - some wonderful Saturday nights.
It's no time for resting...........because THIS Friday night is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY.
And Saturday evening, April 16th, Miss Annie brings TALLGRASS EXPRESS to the Emma Chase Music Hall at 7:30 p.m. We're excited......and looking forward to a new tune or two! Everyone is welcome to join us.
We've begun receiving the second round of confirmations from FLINT HILLS FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL presenters. We know we'll have Kettle Corn; Root Beer; RopeMaking, SoapMaking, Childrens' Crafts; BroomMaking, ButterMaking, Quilting, Sewing, Spinning and Weaving. It'll be another grand year!
The 8 Wonders Exhibit at the Eisenhower Museum in Abilene opened a few weeks ago. The Reception for the 8 Wonders Winners will be this Saturday, the 16th at 2:00 p.m. We'll be there to represent you all. (And, of course, we'll be back in time for music!) The BOOK of the 8 Wonders Winners will also be released at the Reception. We'll bring some home. Marci tells me that we're gonna LOVE the portrayal of Music at the Emma! Congratulations to all of you who have ever participated or attended the Friday night Jam Sessions at the Emma Chase Cafe. \ All of that, in our SpringTime Community of Chase County, Kansas.
April 7, 2011 - This is PRAIRIE FIRE FESTIVAL week. By watching the weather reports, it is not certain that we'll see many prairie fire set "on purpose" this week. But if anybody ever doubted that Mother Nature burned this tallgrass prairie before man did it, they should have been paying attention this past Sunday night! During the wind and rain and hail and lightning and thunder, (and we are told, a microburst), our local fire departments spent the late afternoon/evening pretty well chasing themselves around the County, trying to monitor some of Mother Nature's own, personal, lightning-set fires!
So.....some of you will get the Leader on Wednesday. You'll still have time to plan to attend HIKE HOLDER's talk Wednesday evening at 6:30, at the Emma - "WHAT CONSTITUTES A TALLGRASS PRAIRIE?". We hear this talk every year, and we learn something NEW every year, because Mike has new information to share every year!
Thursday evening, JOHN O'HARA will be at the Emma, to show "RETURN TO PRAIRY ERTH".
Friday evening, of course, is K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'.
Saturday's schedule is full: 11:00 a.m. is GEORGE LeROUX, speaking about "MAMMALS OF THE TALLGRASS PRAIRIE".
Saturday at 1:00 p.m. is JIM GRAY, Western Historian, author, talking about "PRAIRIE FIRE TALES and PRAIRIE TRAILS".
Saturday at 2:00 is ERIN BLACKSHERE POPPERT, presenting "MY KAW ANCESTORS". Erin dresses in full regalia when she speaks. Not only is Erin of Kaw ancestory, she has familial ties to Chase County's CloverCliff Ranch.
Saturday at 3:00 is ROGER WEAVER, local photographer, showing his images of an absolutely "perfect" prairie fire he shot a couple of years ago at Bazaar ......and all of this set to music, too.
And at 4:00, join ANNIE WILSON, for Tunes of the TALLGRASS PRAIRIE. We saw Annie at the Western Music Association meeting last Sunday. She's as good as any of 'em.
THEN, Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m., join Greenwood County Extension Agent, Kansas Historian, Singer, JEFF DAVIDSON, as he entertains us during the closing session of Prairie Fire Festival 2011. JEFF was also at the Western Music Association meeting last Sunday........he has a lovely voice. Can't think of a better way to get a dose of Kansas History than though song! And that'll round out Prairie Fire Festival for this year.
Oh, yes...........we DID enjoy the Hootin' Annies last Saturday night! We think we've found the Emma's new theme song, "Five Pounds O' Possum". How funny!
Saturday night, April 16th, Miss Annie and the TALLGRASS EXPRESS come to the Music Hall. We hope that you'll all be able to join us.
It sure 'nuff seems like Spring - weird weather and all.....in our Prairie Fire Community of Chase County, Kansas.
March 24, 2011 - What a fine weekend! We love our Gospel nights. And Saturday night was wonderful! Frankie Valens' Concert brought in $804.00 to share between the Youth Technology Center and the Chase County Food Pantry. And we had a super good time! Thank you ALL for participating for this worthy cause!
The word for the week: VOTE!
This coming Friday night is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session.
THEN, Saturday night, March 26, at 7:30 p.m., plan to join us at the Emma Chase Music Hall for an evening with Jeff Schaefer and "CIRCLE DRIVE". This will be an evening of really good, old-time BlueGrass Music.
It's time for EARLY VOTING!
PRAIRIE PASTTIMES re-opens for the season on Friday, April 1. That same evening, we'll gather for TALLGRASS PICKIN'.
THEN........Saturday evening, April 2, we'll just celebrate this year's PRAIRIE PASTTIMES opening date with another great BlueGrass performance. Join us for the "HOOTIN' ANNIES"......five of the best female BlueGrass musicians 'round these parts. "Karla-Annie" Campbell was chosen the Society for the Preservation of BlueGrass Music "Bass Player of the Year" award in 2009. And she's only gotten better and better since then. And the others can well keep up with HER!
You should GO VOTE!
After that.........it's time for PRAIRIE FIRE FESTIVAL - April 4 through 9. We can tell you now, that the guest for the FINAL evening of Prairie Fire Festival.......will be JEFF DAVIDSON, Greenwood County Extension Agent. We know that many of you know Jeff. You'll LOVE his presentation!
The requests from musicians who want to come perform for you........just keep comin' in.
Speaking of musicians - Fiddle players Derrick and Kelsie Doty, welcomed little Emmett Josiah Doty into the world at 10:29 a.m. on Monday this week. 7 lbs, 4 oz, 20" long. He looks suspiciously like a fiddle-player to us!!!!!
It really IS time to VOTE! There will be a Community Meeting on Thursday, March 31 to introduce you to the Candidates for Cottonwood Falls City Council.........at the Baptist Church, 600 Sycamore. It's always important to inform yourself, and to make your concerns known......in our Patriotic Community of Chase County, Kansas.
March 17, 2011 - We enjoyed BlueGrass night.........AND our special guest. And we had a great time Saturday night with Ashley Davis. All we can say to the young ladies of Chase County.......you missed a TREAT! A 6'4", broad-shouldered, prettier than Michael Bolton........ TREAT! Ashley's music was beautiful......and so was her fiddle-player!!!!
There has been a schedule change for this coming weekend. You won't want to miss this one. The Emma Chase Music Hall welcomes FRANKIE VALENS back to town for an entire BENEFIT Concert. Cousin Frankie (THERE's a story!) will perform his favorite religious music for the 1st half of the Concert......and he will feature his 1960's and 1970's pop music during the second half of the Concert. His lovely wife, Phyllis, a concert pianist, will also perform. There is NO ADMISSION charge to the Concert, but the Gratuity Jar will be passed .....FREQUENTLY.....and then, we'll pass it AGAIN! All proceeds will be divided equally between the Chase County Food Pantry and the Youth Technology Center. Both are wonderful Chase County Ministries in
If you will be unable to attend the Concert, but would like to make a donation, you may hand it to your Pastor along with a note designating the contribution for the Benefit, or bring it by the Emma Chase Cafe. Can't think of a better way to raise money for a worthy cause.......or one that'd be more fun! It is rumored that the "do-wop" girls might be back for an encore! There'll be a few square feet reserved for dancing, if anybody's up to it! The Emma Chase Cafe will offer a special "Happy Days" Menu of Burgers, Hot Dogs & Fries from 5 to 7 before the Concert.
THEN.....on Saturday night, March 26th.....return to the Emma Chase Music Hall for an smokin'-hot evening of amazing BlueGrass Music, when Jeff Schaefer brings "CIRCLE DRIVE" to Chase County. Members of "CIRCLE DRIVE" are Ryan Durst, Stan D'Aubin, Jeff Schaefer, Jeremy Littrell, and David Ruble. We are expecting a special treat from the Durst Children. One of these guys is driving all the way up from Arkansas to perform for you. And, they'll have had plenty of practice after THIS weekend! (That'd be the reason for the schedule change!)
Well.....after the time change, and the annoying little snow......is it time for Spring, in our anticipatory Community of Chase County, Kansas?
March 10, 2011 - FIRST.....the date in last week's paper for the ASHLEY DAVIS Concert was incorrect! I apparently didn't reach far enough for the 1-2, and instead got the 2-3. That classifies as a phat-phingered type-o. That's what happens when I use somebody else's computer to write the column from Texas. Many apologies!
The CORRECT date for ASHLEY DAVIS Concert is SATURDAY, MARCH 12.....that makes it THIS Saturday. ASHLEY DAVIS will perform beautiful Celtic Music at 7:30 p.m. at the Emma Chase Music Hall. MIKE IRELAND, Irish tune fiddler extraordinaire, will play Irish tunes during St. Patrick's Day dinner at the Emma Chase Cafe. By the time the evening is over, you'll have PLENTY of Irish! It's gonna be a lovely evening.
So, guess who's coming to K-177 BlueGrass Pickin' Friday night? Well, okay.......he doesn't do BlueGrass, but he WILL sing a few songs for us. An elementary school classmate from long ago is bringing FRANKIE VALENS to Friday night Pickin'. As it turns out, Frankie Valens' great-great Grandparents homesteaded in Chase County - up Middle Creek......on the Miller property.......family name Piper. Alice Kay Starks Miller and Frankie Valens are coming to CWF to do some historical research, and will join us at music Friday night. You can google Frankie Valens' website to see a list of the tunes he sang in the 60's
Then, the NEXT Friday, March 18th, is TALLGRASS GOSPEL PICKIN'.
On Saturday night, March 19th, get ready for a little BlueGrass! Get ready for a LOT of BlueGrass!! Get ready for some awesome, amazing BlueGrass!!! Jeff Schaefer brings CIRCLE DRIVE to entertain you. Others in the group are Ryan Durst, Stan D'Aubin, Jeremy Littrell, and David Ruble. That'll be 7:30 p.m. at the Emma Chase Music Hall.
The SPRING BALL is scheduled for Saturday evening, April 30. Live music and a live caller! You're ALL invited!
We have signed The READY BROTHERS (Been, Never, Ever & Wuzzy) for Saturday night, August 6th. Now, you're welcome to look 'em up on the internet. DO be prepared for an evening of crazy music! You WILL have a great time!
And just for the record.....You remember that Diana Sigel watches for the Buzzards to return to Chase County about St. Patrick's Day every March. Well.....Jim Adkins dropped into the Emma last Friday to to say that there were two buzzards circling the river behind his house (that'd be the 4th). Diana's advice to Jim............"keep movin'!"
It appears that there will be one more blast of Winter in our "Gosh, I wish it were SpringTime" Community of Chase County, Kansas!

And Saturday, March 12th, Mike Ireland will entertain us with Celtic tunes on the fiddle during Dinner at the Emma. And ASHLEY DAVIS will perform at 7:30 at the Emma Chase Music Hall. Ashley is a native-born Kansan, who has studied extensively in Ireland. She normally lives in New York, but is currently back in Lawrence while her husband is finishing school there. This will be a FINE Irish evening on Broadway!
Now, if the weather could cooperate...........in our sneakin' up on Springtime Comunity of Chase County, Kansas.
February 17, 2011 - There is substantial stuff afoot this week.
Friday night is TALLGRASS GOSPEL Pickin'.
On Saturday, February 19th, TALLGRASS EXPRESS will perform their monthly Concert at the Emma Chase Music Hall at 7:30 p.m. That's a "don't miss" deal.....it's good for your Flint Hills soul! Miss Annie tells us that they have worked up a new tune or two. Can't WAIT to hear it!
The Chase County Historical Society is having their Annual Open Meeting on February 24th at 7:00 p.m. EVERYONE is invited to attend.
And be on notice: There will be NO MUSIC on Friday night, February 25th. Nor will the Emma Chase be open for dinner.
We have just signed a totally delightful experience for Saturday night, March 12th. And it will serve as our Chase County St. Patrick's Day celebration. ASHLEY DAVIS will bring her treasury of Celtic tunes to Chase County for a Concert at the Music Hall. A native of Lawrence, Kansas who normally lives in New York, and who works and studies in Ireland, ASHLEY DAVIS will perform some of her own tunes of the Celtic genera, and, of course, traditional Celtic tunes.........just like the ones she performed on the "Today Show" and at the New York City Irish Center. ASHLEY has performed and recorded with many of the renowned Celtic musicians. And soon, she'll be able to add "the Emma Chase" to her resume'. Oh, wouldn't Gary Hughes have loved this!
AND, as if THAT weren't enough, MIKE IRELAND and his lovely fiddle will entertain during the dinner meal at the Emma Chase Cafe prior to the Concert! What an evening!
TALLGRASS EXPRESS have a previous engagement for the 3rd Saturday night in March, so Jeff Schaefer and CIRCLE DRIVE have agreed to fill in.......with an evening of BlueGrass music. CIRCLE DRIVE consists of Ryan Durst, Stan D'Aubin, Jeremy Littrell, David Ruble, and Jeff Schaefer. Well, it's a pity they couldn't find some MUSICIANS!!!!!!!! We suspect you'll need to be there for this one!
We're workin' on one more amazing concert for April. We'll keep ya' posted.
PRAIRIE FIRE FESTIVAL is April 4 through 9. We are confirming speakers. George LeRoux will be here to tell us about Prairie Mammals. And Jim Gray will be here to tell us some Prairie Fire tales.
Oh, my.........lots is fixin' to happen. We may need to begin the multiple vitamins now......and buy a comfortable lawn chair. It's gonna be a good music year.........in our wonderfully musical Community of Chase County, Kansas.
February 10, 2011 - Here's food for thought: Is it possible for e-mail to freeze up? We've seen some dogs here in the City.....trying to get about on two legs, while holding the other two up out of the snow! Funny sight!
We've had just about enough Winter; it's time for Spring. Be it so decreed!
Maybe a little music will warm us up: Friday, February 11th is K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN'. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all could GET there?
Friday, February 18th is TALLGRASS GOSPEL PICKIN'.

Try to stay in and stay warm.....in our snowy Community of Chase County, Kansas!
February 3, 2011 - What a FINE Birthday Party for Kansas! So many "thank-yous" to everyone who helped to put the day together and to everybody who participated.
