Chase County Doin's July 29, 2010 -This has been a sad week for all of us who make or listen to music at the Emma. Bruce Hoover of Emporia, one of our "original" musicians has died. Bruce preferred to play Gospel music. He regularly performed at Nursing Homes in the Emporia area. Bruce was the gentleman who suggested that Sue become "Emma Chase." Then, one of our "original" listeners has passed, "Sarge" Jim Haynes of Olpe and his wife Arlyne, rarely missed a Friday evening before his long illness. He will be missed! And, the ORIGINAL listener is gone. Neva McCabe, also known as "Mom" died this week. Mom was the pre-eminent presiding cashier at the Emma since October 13, l998, and the best little silverware-wrapper in the world. It just won’t be the same! Ah, we’ve had an email. Remember the Nate Wilson family from Manhattan? A whole flock of youngsters who ALL make music? They plan to be here Friday night the 30th to join in the CONTRA MUSIC Jam Session. And they’re bringing their Celtic music to entertain us. The lawnchairs had just better reside in the trunk of the car for the next few weeks, so that you won’t be caught without seating on Broadway.
Saturday evening, July 31st, we’ll be out on Broadway for the annual JUDY CODER and COWGIRL SWING STREET DANCE. Not that there’s ever a lot of dancin’ goin’ on, but there’s always a great deal of fine listenin’ taking place. Suggested gratuity to the musicians - $8.00. That’s at 7:30 p.m. The Emma will serve a special BBQ dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday evening, August 6th will be TALLGRASS PICKIN’ at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night, August 7th the Emma will host the debut of THE TALLGRASS EXPRESS’s brand new CD, "Clean Curve of Hill Against Sky, Songs of the Kansas Flint Hills". All of the tunes on this CD are original - and all but one written by Miss Annie Wilson, herownself. The other one was written by Charlie Laughridge. That’s 7:30 p.m. What an evening this will be! And the Emma will serve a special Concert menu from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Suggested gratuity to musicians - $8.00. Friday evening, August 13th, plan to join K-177 BLUEGRASS jam session at 7:30 p.m. on Broadway. Then, on Saturday August 14th, we’ll be entertained by The BASEMENT PICKERS from Emporia.......for an evening of fine......just FINE, do you hear.....BlueGrass music. Again, there’ll be a special concert menu prior to the Concert. Suggested gratuity to the musicians - $8.00. Friday night music is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. At 7:30 p.m. We saw a forecast that mentioned something about rain. Ah, well.....we can always go inside! The "To Do" at Pioneer Bluffs with "Return to PrairyErth" is Saturday afternoon/evening, July 24th. And the Chase County Fair begins Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. with the 4-H Clothing & Fashion Revue. Then, plan for Sunday afternoon, with the Ministerial Alliance Sing-a-Long at the ShelterHouse at 2:30 p.m., followed by the horse show at 5:00 p.m. Then........a whole week of activities! Friday evening, July 30, we’ll be pickin’ Contra and Folk Music at the Emma Chase Jam Session at 7:30 p.m. And Saturday evening, July 31, we’ll welcome JUDY CODER and COWGIRL SWING to town for their annual "Street Dance"........which usually turns into more of a "Street Listen". Whatever, we’re guaranteed and wonderful evening of music! Bring your lawnchairs, and the gratuity for the jar! Then, it’s AUGUST, for heaven’s sake! Who can keep up? We’ve had some nice pledges from folks who read about the proposition to the County Commissioners regarding the repair/replacement of the CourtHouse Clock. And the overwhelming response is........"Let’s just do the whole thing!!!!" So, we believe that’s what we’re going to do. We’ll announce next week, the address where contributions can be mailed. In the mean time......if you’d like to let us know what you’d like to pledge, you may phone us at (620) 273-6020. There are some VERY generous folks ‘round here! And there’s more of all of it coming up! Friday night, July 16th is TALLGRASS GOSPEL Pickin’. Watch for posters about the communities for the Premier of "Return to PrairyErth" to be held at Pioneer Bluffs on Saturday, July 24th beginning 4:00 p.m. Dinner will be available by reservation at (620) 753-3484. Big doin’s! The CHASE COUNTY FAIR is Sunday, July 25th through the 29th. OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY at 7:30 pn Friday, July 23. The BASEMENT PICKERS will do us some BLUEGRASS at 7:30 on Saturday evening, August 14th. You can hop to your computers and view it at: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/weekend-window-sea-grass-11136650 Then, AMERICAN PROFILE Magazine (which is an insert in papers all ‘round the United States), had a great shot on the cover, of the Queen of the Kansas Prairie - our very own CHASE COUNTY COURTHOUSE! And the main article inside was about small-town courthouses, and was mostly about OURS - with more pictures! We have heard directly or indirectly from all four corners of the United States, both coasts, the North and the South, the Grand Canyon and various parts in between.......from folks who have seen the article. She’s a dandy! And so it is.......in our wondrous-dandy Community of Chase County, Kansas! July 8, 2010 - We’re back from vacation! With lots of information to share. The 4th of July weekend was a bit soggy (that WASN’T the news). The news is.....that the fireworks have been rescheduled.....for the FAIR. That’ll be neat! Somebody’s Grandson, Kelly Burke from Houston, sang with Bennie at Friday night Pickin’ two Fridays in a row. Mom and Dad were right.....Kelly has a beautiful clear-as-a-bell voice. It was a real treat! Those of you who missed the NICKEL’s WORTH Concert on Saturday evening, missed a fine evening of music. We’ll have them back. Friday evening music this week will be K-177 BlueGrass. And Saturday evening will be a Concert by The PRAIRIE ACRE from Lawrence, Kansas. So, you better cut out this column and tape it to the refrigerator for handy reference! Did ya’ see the nice little article ‘bout the Flint Hills in the current copy of MIDWEST LIVING magazine? The Flint Hills pops up in that publication just ever so often. And we lucky folks get to live here ALL THE TIME - in our Summertime Community of Chase County, Kansas June 17, 2010 - As if there were not ENOUGH excitement, what with Friday night Pickin’, River Suite, the Flint Hills FolkLife Festival and the Symphony in the Flint Hills, now we have FloodWaters to keep us occupied! There is certainly never a dull moment! In spite of the rains that caused the flood water, the Friday night events, the FolkLife Festival and the Symphony were the luckiest gigs in town this weekend. Lots and lots of people; much for them to do; and pretty decent weather for them to do it in! Yeah, we know that it rained Saturday morning, but we’ll prefer to call that a "bath", slap on some cologne, and get ready for the rest of the festivities! All in all, it was a great weekend! Let’s see.........it’s probably time now, to talk about TEA AT THREE on TUESDAY, JUNE 29th. We haven’t done this in a long, long time, and we’ve had several requests recently. We’ve been asked a hundred times, "When will we take the music outside?" We will take music outside when the weather is perfect! And it’s getting close; we’ve had a couple of beautiful Spring evenings. But it must be warm enough for the musicians’ hands; warm enough for the audience to be comfortable; and NOT WINDY enough so that the music will stay on the music racks! So, dust off the lawn chairs and get ‘em ready! And keep ‘em in the trunk of the car. It cannot be too far off, now! And NOBODY wants to see our beautiful CourtHouse against a Spring blue sky background more than we do! In our can-hardly-WAIT-to-get-outside Community of Chase County, Kansas! April 29, 2010 - Oh, the Grand Ball was.....just GRAND! Beautiful gowns to admire. Duded up gentlemen-type folks. Wonderful guests who enjoy dancing. And wonderful music! Some of our local folks will be there, promoting our wonderful Flint Hills Communities. All THAT, combined with High School Baccalaureate, Graduation and the like, will make our Flint Hills month of May a very busy month. We’ve made several trips up and down the Scenic ByWay recently. The spring carpet of green grass is awesome! Both in and out of our SpringTime Community of Chase County, Kansas April 22, 2010 - Now, it’s been several days without rain (we’ll ignore the little sprinkles the other evening). And forecast looks like a few more good days. We LIKE this Springtime! If you have not taken the trip around towns to looks at the lilacs and the redbuds, you SHOULD! What a spectacular year! Probably because so many of them were frozen back last night year, they seem particularly hearty this year. And have any of you noticed the peculiar redbud tree behind the Cottonwood Valley Bank? It’s got clusters of redbud BUDS growing out of the trunk and limbs. It looks somethin’ like a redbud fungus! Strange!
Our out-of-state company this past week had a great time in Chase County’s Springtime. And we had a grand time with our company. There is never a dull moment with those guys! Mark DeCou reports a successful scrimshaw class at Prairie PastTimes. The next class is a beginner quilting class in June. Friday night’s music is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. It certainly is not long until High School Graduation. Congratulations to all of the young people who will venture out into the world. We're counting on you!!!!! Live music by The TallGrass Express with a live caller. So, shake the wrinkles out of your beautiful gown, find your white gloves and plan to join us. The dance is not absolutely restricted to period dress - we’d welcome you in your finery of any period! Let’s see.......have we told you that The Prairie Acre will be here on Saturday, July 10th? And that Judy Coder and CowGirl Swing will be here on Saturday, July 31st. And that Nick Charles from Australia, has confirmed for BroomWeed Festival in September? Gonna be some fine music this summer! And THAT includes the every Friday night jam session at the Emma! Wash up the lawn chairs. They’re gonna be busy! And we’re all luckier than anybody - to be living in our Spectacular SpringTime Community of Chase County, Kansas!
April 8, 2010 - Prairie Fire Festival is underway! Minus the prairie fires, anyway. This wind is high enough to blow the hair right off your head! Monday’s speaker was greeted with great enthusiasm for the Prairie Plants. What an interesting talk. And we’ve had many phone calls about Tuesday’s lecture. Wednesday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m., Bruce Hogle will bring his digital slideshow, "Flint Hills Images". Thursday, April 8, at 6:30 p.m., Roger Weaver will share the images he took about a year ago at a picture-perfect fire at Bazaar. Friday evening will be the Prairie Fire Festival edition of K-177 BlueGrass Pickin’, and we’ve already heard from enough of the BlueGrass pickers to know that it will be a good session. Saturday, April 10 at 11:00 a.m., Mike Holder will present his "What Constitutes a TallGrass Prairie". This is the lecture, around which the Prairie Fire Festival revolves. March 25, 2010 - The buzzards are back! Well, perhaps not in large numbers, yet, but a couple of our best buzzard-watchers have reported seeing a bird in each of two distinctly separate locations. The Second Saturday Country MarketPlace will have some interesting tables. And there it is.....one more year of Prairie Fire Festival! March 18, 2010 - Okay, during a quick trip to Wichita last Thursday, we spotted a bluebird near Phil and Kathy’s house in Matfield Green. Now, that could mean a couple of things: 1) somebody has been spray-painting starlings, or 2) Spring is not too far away. We’ll opt for the second one. There have been no additional reported buzzard-sightings. But Bruce Brock reported a week or more ago, that the sandpiper near his house appears to be nesting. And we’ve been told that now is the time to hang red ribbons at the site where we will hang our hummingbird feeders. This coming Friday night, March 19, is TallGrass Gospel. And Friday night, March 26 is Old Timey Rock & Roll and Vintage Country. Followed by the Chase County Contra Dance on Saturday, March 27 at 7:00. We’re jazzed about Prairie Fire Festival. Oh, and speaking of bluebirds (and we were, earlier) there will be fresh-made bluebird houses for sale during Prairie Fire Festival. So.....make it a great week.....in our bluebird sort of a Springtime Community of Chase County, Kansas!
March 11, 2010 - The vote is.......that rain is better than snow. But by a small margin. Sunshine is DEFINITELY better than gloom! So this weekend is the BUZZARD WATCH. One of our eagle-eyed participants has already spotted the advance pair. Be sure to attend the fine evening of music (and dance, if you wish), Saturday the 13th at 7:30 PM at the Emporium.. We’ll share Buzzard Watch information so that you can be prepared for buzzard watching for the next couple of weeks. Live music by the Buzzard Bait Band (many of which are live). All gratuities to the musicians. A long-range notice: Mark DeCou will teach a beginner Scrimshaw class on Saturday, April 17, from 10:00 AM to whenever you finish. The HorseShoe Creek Singers will finish the week-long celebration with Native American Singing and Dancing. You may see the confirmed line-up at www.prairiefirefestival.com. And we’ll let you know more as time progresses. Friday evening, March 12th is K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN’. Friday evening, March 19 is TALLGRASS GOSPEL. And trees are budding in our Spring-time optomistic Community of Chase County, Kansas. Last Friday evening was perhaps the BEST Rock & Roll evening we’ve ever had. Don’t know why, exactly, but it was fine! Maybe it was the good audience!!! THIS coming Friday will be March 4th, and we’ll all enjoy TALLGRASS PICKIN’. It is time to be outside, yet? Well, maybe not! Friday, March 12 will be K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN’ AND, Saturday, March 13th will be the Chase County BUZZARD WATCH Festival! Now, as you ALL know, the buzzards return to Chase County about mid-March. Our local buzzard expert, Diana Sigel goes even so far as to claim St. Patrick’s Day. Join us at 7:30 PM at 220 ½ Broadway for the BUZZARD BALL (also known as a Country/Western Dance). Live music will be provided by the BUZZARD BAIT BAND. There is no charge for admission, but the opportunity for gratuities for the musicians will be available. We’ll bring you up to date on any buzzard sightings, and share some important buzzard information (like there IS any important buzzard information!) The Emma Chase Café will offer a special Festival Menu from 5 to 7:30 PM. TALLGRASS GOSPEL Pickin’ will be Friday, March 19th at 7:30 PM. February 25, 2010 - This week's "Doin's" comes to you from Houston, Texas. It's time for the Smith/Burke Christmas celebration, you know. Let's see......on Sunday in Houston, the temperature was 70 degrees or a little more. The grilled wild hog Christmas dinner was excellent. The antique shops were wonderful! The performance by the Houston Children's Chorus was spectacular. And Grandma got lots of darning eggs to add to her collection. Monday evening, we're headed home between two snow storms. Oh, boy! Friday evening, February 26th is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. Saturday evening, February 27th is the monthly CONTRA DANCE. Beginner instruction at 6:30 PM; dance begins at 7:00. Live music by the Matfield Green Radio Show. Class for the month of March will be BEGINNER QUILTING CLASS, taught by the quilt gals from Prairie PastTimes. You may receive additional information and/or sign up for the class by phoning (620) 273-6020. And, just to pique your interest.....we have an offer......for a quartet to perform Civil War era music for us here in Chase County. We're working on a date. Doesn't seem quite appropriate for the March Chase County Buzzard Watch. Perhaps we should do it before the April 24th Grand Ball......just to get us in the proper mood. Alright, so Springtime is perhaps NOT just around the corner, but we're THINKIN' about it, anyway.......in our soggy, icy, frost-bit Community of Chase County, Kansas. February 18, 2010 - The Valentines Waltz was so much fun that we shall surely do it again.....and we may not wait until Valentines Day! Friday evening, February 19th is TALLGRASS GOSPEL PICKIN’. And Saturday, February 20th......plan to meet with Miss Diana at 2:00 PM to participate in the GIANT PUMPKIN GROWIN’ class. There is no fee for this class.
And don’t forget the CHIMES CHOIR PRACTICE on Sunday afternoon at 3:00. That’s held at the EMPORIUM Friday, February the 26th is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY. That’s at 7:30 at the EMPORIUM.

Life is good........and we’re lookin’ forward to Springtime.......in our yet chilly Community of Chase County, Kansas! February 11, 2010 - Hey, we saw the sun.........for a moment.......and we have witnesses! We are certainly looking forward to the number 45.......next weekend. Maybe, Perhaps, Possumbly. We have a good group of "students" for the 1st Class of FOLKLORE and COMMUNITY last Tuesday evening. To correct an earlier boo-boo........there WILL be Chimes Choir Practice on Sunday, February 14th.........and February 21st. At the EMPORIUM . . . . . at 3:00 in the afternoon. Friday evening, February 12th, it’ll be time for the BLUEGRASS JAM SESSION at 7:30 PM. Since we doubt that it will warm up enough to be out-of-doors, we’ll most likely be at the EMPORIUM. Saturday, February 13th, we’ll gather for the VALENTINES WALTZ.......at the EMPORIUM at 7:30 PM. We’ll enjoy two hours of waltz (only) music. There is no charge; any gratuities will go to the musicians. Friday evening, February 19th will be TALLGRASS GOSPEL Pickin’. Miss Diana met with a couple of prospective Giant Pumpkin Growers on Saturday. The class if on Saturday, February 20th at 2:00 PM. If you need to sign up for the Class, please call 620-273-6020. Otherwise, we’ll see ya’ on Saturday the 20th. Dress for whatever weather we get.......and look forward to Springtime......in our cold ol’ Arctic-like Community of Chase County, Kansas. February 4, 2010 - Breaking news: Apparently, Pauxatawney Phil (the Pennsylvania Groundhog) DID see his shadow this morning, so the Pennsylvanians are expected to have 6 more weeks of winter weather. The Benderville Bunny DID NOT see his shadow this morning - and we have absolutely NO IDEA what that means, except that the sun was not shining in Benderville this morning!!! There will be no Chimes Choir practice next Sunday on Super Bowl Sunday. Chimes Choir practice will resume as per usual on Sunday, February 21 at 3:00 PM. Friday night, February 5th will be TALLGRASS PICKERS jam session at 7:30 PM. Saturday, February 6th, all of you Potential Giant Pumpkin Growers plan to meet with local Pumpkin-Growing Princess, Diana Sigel to learn a bit more about Giant Pumpkin Growing, and to sign up for the Seminar to be held on Saturday, September 20th. Chase County WILL have a Giant Pumpkin Growing Weigh-off in October this year, and you’ll certainly want to be READY! Friday night, February 12th will be K-177 BLUEGRASS PICKIN’.
And Saturday night, February 13th will be the VALENTINES WALTZ (two hours of live dance music - waltzes only) at the EMPORIUM from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. Everyone is invited. There will be no admission charge; gratuity to musicians. And it may be time again, to invite all interested gentlemen to attend the Mens’ Prayer Breakfast every Thursday morning at 6:30 AM at the Emma Chase Cafe. Various configurations of Chase County men have gathered through the years for breakfast, to study the Bible; and to pray for citizens of our County and the Leadership of our Community, our State and our Nation. The numbers of participants is dwindling, but the need for prayer is still great. Have a good week, now.....in our still-wintertime Community of Chase County, Kansas.
January 28, 2010 - Apologies for the fat-fingered type-O on the date for Chimes Choir practice in last week’s column. Practices for the chines choir will now be EVERY Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM at the EMPORIUM. Reports are that there was a good group in attendance this past Sunday......and that the music was recognizable. Okay, we’ve got CONTRA & FOLK MUSIC jam session this Friday. It’s always perky and lively and fun. Good pickin’ and good listenin’. That’ll be at 7:30 PM. And we’re really looking forward to the FOLKLORE and COMMUNITY class which will meet every Tuesday evening in February at 7:30 at the Emma Chase Café. We have enrollment forms here at the café to be mailed in; or you may enroll online through the Butler County telephone enrollment situation; or there will be someone here to enroll you 30 minutes BEFORE the first class session. We need to have an idea of how many will attend so that we’ll have enough books ready. The class fee covers the cost of materials. The first Friday in February begins the February rotation of jam sessions, beginning with TALLGRASS PICKIN’. The Second Saturday in February, we’ll enjoy live music for two hours of waltzing at the VALENTINES WALTZ on Saturday, February 13th. The WALTZ begins at 7:30 PM at the EMPORIUM. Everyone is invited........there is no charge; gratuity to the musicians. And so it is........with lots to do.......in our slightly above frigid Community of Chase County, Kansas! January 21, 2010 - Here’s a day-brightener for ya’: Linda Koch will hold the first practice session of the newly formed COMMUNITY CHIMES CHOIR at 3:00 Sunday afternoon, January 17th at the EMPORIUM. Anyone who is interested in participating on a regular basis with the COMMUNITY CHIMES CHOIR is invited to attend. Oh, what a joy it will be to hear music performed on the beautiful chimes! Another interesting tidbit: the Butler Community College sanctioned class entitled FOLKLORE and COMMUNITY will meet the Tuesdays of February at 7:30 at the Emma Chase Café. That’s four Tuesday evenings in a row......throughout the month of February. There are enrollment forms scattered around the Community. Enrollment may be done through the Butler Community College enrollment telephone situation, by mail, or possibly at the first session of class. There is a fee for the class which covers the cost of materials. Friday evening, January 22 is OLD TIMEY ROCK & ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session. That’s always at 7:30 PM. And then, there’s the monthly CONTRA DANCE. This year, the CONTRA DANCE will be held on the 4th Saturdays of the month, so we’ll see you at the EMPORIUM on Saturday, January 23rd at 7:00 PM, (6:30 if you’d like to participate in the instruction session). Perhaps we can DANCE the fog away! And THIS month, there is a fifth Friday, so we’ll get to enjoy CONTRA & FOLK MUSIC at the last jam session of the month. Gloom and Doom go away.......we could use a few bright days during the month of January! In our waaaay too foggy, drippy Community of Chase County, Kansas! January 14, 2010 - Benderville Reunion was a LOT of fun! We WILL be doing that again. Next time, ya’ll need to come and just sit around and listen.......it’s better than a comedy show on TV! Friday evening, January 15, will be TALLGRASS GOSPEL PICKIN’. Music always begins ‘bout 7:30 PM. Saturday morning at 10:00 AM, those folks who have pre-registered will gather together at The EMPORIUM to learn to make rag dolls. We will learn to make three different dolls. There is a small class fee; all materials will be provided. We should be finished by Noon. If you are interested in attending, call 273-6020 before Saturday. Then, on Friday evening, January 20, we’ll enjoy OLD TIMEY ROCK n’ ROLL and VINTAGE COUNTRY jam session. The 2010 CONTRA DANCE schedule lists our first CONTRA DANCE of the year for Saturday, January 23. We’ll be at The EMPORIUM. Beginner instruction begins at 6:30 PM, and the actual dance begins at 7:00 PM. A couple of items for your long-range calendar: Local giant pumpkin-grower Diana Sigel will offer a seminar on Saturday, February 6th at 2:00 PM. She will be telling us a bit about growing great big ol’ pumpkins, and signing folks up to take the actual class on Saturday, February 20. Diana told us this past week that she has received a new shipment of giant pumpkin seeds. The whole objective is to get several folks involved in growing giant pumpkins so that they can compete in the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off next October. The second long-range item is the SPRING GRAND BALL. It will be held on Saturday, April 24th at The EMPORIUM. This is your opportunity to wear those period outfits we have stored in the far left-hand side of the closet. So, has it been cold enough for you? Bob Mushrush was in one day this past week. He said that he had gotten up at 4:00 in the morning to read his thermometer, and it said "15 degrees below zero". So, we’ve asked him not to get up that early anymore. If it’s gonna be that cold, we really don’t want to know anything about it! Yesterday afternoon, the thermometer at our house read 52 degrees.....for just a few minutes. Thank goodness for small favors.......in our really cold, wintery old Community of Chase County, Kansas!
January 7, 2010 - We’ve had enough of this "global warming" already. This reminds us of some of the winter storms we had "back in the good old days". Which really weren’t all that good, anyway! Speaking of the "good old days". If you’re not too busy this Saturday, January 9th, plan on joining in on the BENDERVILLE REUNION. We’ll meet at The EMPORIUM at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon, for several hours of "remembering"....and some "show and tell". We have some wonderful stuff to discuss! Then, we’ll offer a gourmet Ham & Beans and Cornbread Dinner from 5 to 7:30 PM. After which, we’ll enjoy some fine music by the Benderville Guitar Wresting Society. So, the deal is......honored guests will be ANYONE who ever lived in Benderville, ANYONE who ever WANTED to live in Benderville, and FRIENDS of Bendervillians. That should pretty well include everybody! Now, for those of you who don’t know......Benderville is a gated community here in Cottonwood Falls. The problem is......that the lock is on the wrong side of the gate! We’ll see ya’ there! The Rag Doll making class will be held on Saturday, January 16 at 10:00 AM. We’ll be making "covered wagon dolls", "handkerchief dolls" and "church dolls". If you are interested in participating in this class, call 273-6020 to enroll no later than Thursday noon. All supplies will be furnished, which is the reason we’ll not be able to accept last-minute "walk-ins". And more exciting news: The Flint Hills FolkLife Center will offer a February class entitled FOLKLORE and COMMUNITY. The class is held under the auspices of Butler County Community College, and will be held every Tuesday evening in February at 7:30 PM......at 220 ½ Broadway. The class is taught by Dr. Deborah Crawford. Enrollment forms are available at the Emma Chase Café, and information for telephone enrollment is available. There is a fee for the class. This is the first of many classes planned for 2010. The Chase County Contra Dance Society is looking forward to a new year of dances. The dances will be held on the 4th Saturday of every month (except September). Music is provided by the Matfield Green Radio Show, and the caller is normally Lucy Smith. Beginner instruction is at 6:30 PM, and dances begin at 7:00. For additional information, call 273-6391. And Friday night jam sessions began in fine style on New Year’s Day evening. The weather was bitter, but the music was fantastic. The jam session on Friday, January 8 is K-177 BlueGrass Pickin’. This will be a year busy with activity. We hope you’ll find something you can enjoy........in our exciting Community of Chase County, Kansas.
